International Leadership
🇺🇳 United Nations Engagement
Non-Permanent Member of the UN Security Council (2024–2025)
Sierra Leone was elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council,
providing the country with a voice in high-level decisions concerning global peace and security.
Presidency of the UN Security Council
During its term, Sierra Leone has served as President of the Security Council,
leading significant deliberations on peace, security, and disarmament —
including debates on Small Arms and Light Weapons and regional stability in West Africa.
ECOWAS Leadership
Chairmanship of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government
Sierra Leone currently holds a historic leadership position within ECOWAS,
serving as Chair of the Authority of Heads of State and Government —
the principal decision-making body of the West African regional bloc.
His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio assumed this position on June 22, 2025,
marking the first time a Sierra Leonean Head of State has led ECOWAS.
Under his chairmanship, Sierra Leone is advancing key priorities including
strengthening democracy, enhancing regional security cooperation,
deepening economic integration, and reinforcing institutional credibility across West Africa.
